Aging Poorly #4: Do the Donkey Kong!

This ep join Sam and Bill on an epic scavenger hunt in perhaps the most nostalgia-friendly episode of our anti-nostalgia podcast. We take on You Can’t Do That On Television, Pac-Man Fever, Treasure of the Four Crowns, and Midnight Madness.

As always, Aging Poorly is on Spotify (curated by Sam).

  1. I first acquired “Pac Man Fever” on a five minute cassette tape from my grade school friend. It was a recording right off of the radio. You’ll be happy to know that the other side was a Beach Boys medley, recorded in the same fashion, as 4th graders were wont to do. This was around their resurgence in the early 80s. It all rocked, and hard.

Even then, I was perplexed by the Pac Man Fever lyrics. Something anticlimactic in “I’m really cookin’ now, eating everything in sight/ All my money’s gone, so I’ll be back tomorrow night.” We’re sent on a journey- “I’ve got all the pattern down, up until the 9th Key/ I’ve got Speedy on my tail, and I know it’s either him or me”. We learn in the end that we’re all chumps.

There is no end to the game. No Golden Fleece. No rescuing of Ms. Pac Man. Nothing. The song is a forecast for the 80s attitude of self-indulgence, Reagan-omics, and junk bonds.

Keep putting your money in the Pac Monster, kids. We’re laughing all the way to the bank.

PS: I lost a lot of quarters to Pac Man. Bitter? Naw.
